The phosphate industry is one of
Florida's largest economic engines -- directly employing about
4,000 men and women in Central Florida alone.
Florida phosphate accounts
for approximately half of US farmers' supply of phosphate
fertilizer, and 20% of the global supply.
Central Florida's "Bone Valley" streches
from Polk County southward through portions of Hillsborough,
Manatee, Hardee, and DeSoto counties. Mosaic operates
four phosphate mines and three fertilizer manufacturing facilities
in Central Florida and the Tampa Bay region.
Before any phosphate mining
begins, exhaustive planning and approval processes are in place to
protect air, water, ecology, transportation, safety and other
environmental, health and public welfare considerations. All
potential impacts must be reviewed and safeguards implemented to
minimize or mitigate risk.
